Genetics & Lineage

Master Kush was developed by White Label Seeds in the Netherlands — one of Sensi Seeds’ sister brands — during the height of Dutch coffeeshop culture in the 1990s. The cross combines Hindu Kush, a pure landrace indica from the mountain ranges spanning Afghanistan and Pakistan, with Skunk #1, itself a landmark hybrid that introduced hybrid vigor into indica breeding programs.

Some phenotypic variation has led breeders to also describe certain phenos as Hindu Kush × Afghan crosses. Regardless of exact parentage, Master Kush captures the essential characteristics of Kush terroir: short stature, dense resin production, and a sedating cannabinoid profile that made Afghan landraces famous. It has since been used as a parent strain in dozens of subsequent indica crosses and continues to win Cannabis Cup awards decades after its release.

Terpene Profile

Master Kush carries a distinctly classic kush nose — earthy and musky at the base, lifted by herbal sweetness and subtle citrus. The terpene triad responsible:

Terpene Typical Range Aroma Reported Effect
Myrcene0.4–0.8%Earthy, musky, herbalSedation, muscle relaxation
Caryophyllene0.2–0.5%Spicy, pepperyAnti-inflammatory, stress relief
Limonene0.1–0.3%Citrus, lemonMood elevation, anti-anxiety

The Myrcene dominance is critical to Master Kush’s identity. High Myrcene content is strongly associated with sedating, “couch-lock” effects in indica strains and contributes to its characteristic earthy, almost hash-like aroma. Caryophyllene adds a peppery spice note and may enhance the strain’s pain-relieving properties through CB2 receptor activation.

Effects & Experience

Master Kush is a textbook indica in terms of its effect progression. Expect the following arc after consumption:

The cerebral component is present but brief — this is not a strain for focus or creativity. Master Kush is evening and nighttime cannabis. The body high is dense and enveloping; many users describe a “melting into the couch” sensation that makes it effective for unwinding after physically or mentally demanding days. At higher doses, sleep onset is likely.

Side effects to be aware of include dry mouth, dry eyes, and mild dizziness at higher doses. The strong sedative profile means daytime use is not recommended for most consumers.

Medical Applications

Master Kush is one of the most referenced indica strains in medical cannabis communities, particularly for conditions that respond well to Myrcene-heavy sedating profiles:

Condition Relevant Properties Suggested Timing

InsomniaHeavy sedation, high Myrcene1–2 hrs before bed
Stress & anxietyFull-body relaxation, LimoneneEvening
Muscle spasmsMyrcene muscle relaxationAs needed (evening)

Flavor, Aroma & Appearance

Master Kush presents an archetypal kush sensory profile. The aroma opens with damp earth and aged wood — reminiscent of hash from the Hindu Kush mountains. Beneath the earthiness sits a surprising citrus note (Limonene) and faint sandalwood sweetness. Some phenotypes express a subtle incense or floral undertone.

On the exhale, the flavor is smooth and spicy with a lingering earthy-citrus finish. The smoke is dense and full — characteristic of compact indica buds with high resin content. Visually, Master Kush produces dense, grape-sized nuggets covered in amber-tipped trichomes. The calyx structure is tight, leaves are deep green with orange pistils, and the overall appearance signals exactly the potency contained within.

Master Kush’s compact indica structure makes it one of the most efficient strains for Sea of Green (SOG) cultivation. Plants stay short and bushy without much training, branching is limited, and the single dominant cola structure translates well to high-density indoor setups. Its mold resistance — a trait inherited from the hardy Hindu Kush landrace — provides a meaningful buffer in environments where humidity control is imperfect. Feed moderately with nutrients; heavy feeding can cause nutrient burn given the compact root zone in SOG containers.
